O.K., Mountain Drive still working well. Just about to try SPD pedals on my folder, so I'll let you know if I can change gear (with the heel click) without the cleats popping out of the pedals (otherwise it’s back to the folding pedals!). Have to go over the North Downs to Dover soon on my London to Paris Charity bike ride. This should give the Mountain Drive a good work out! Had a few moments of concern recently when the change down to the low gear range was a bit reluctant (needed a really firm heel click). However, it’s fine again now, so, I guess it’s just where it was still a bit stiff from being quite new. Recently used the full gear range down in South Devon and it all worked really well. So, it wasn’t a real sprint up the hills, but I didn’t have to get off at all (even on the longest hills) - pretty positive! I’ll update my progress (with pictures) at www.grandadscharitybikeride.com so you can see how the Mountain Drive is performing.

So, my Koga-Miyata Founder S has a fairly good range with its 9-26 tooth Capreo system. But, sometimes you can "spin out" when pressing on during a downhill section (particularly if you have a tailwind). O.K. so I just need to fit a larger chainwheel? Now that just doesn't work, or the low gear just won't be low enough. Also, front derailleurs just aren't suitable for the average folder. But a Schlumpf Mountain Drive will do the trick. Some might think that a 722% gear range is overkill, but you can be sure that when you are getting to the end of a long run and you meet that last killer hill of the day, you'll change your mind about that big gear range! Also, if you live in Cornwall, Wales or the Lake District this system will really eliminate those “get off and push” hills. Some have questioned the efficiency of planetary gear systems. I have to say I really haven't noticed ANY drop in performance in the lower gear range. 16 gear inches up to 121 gear inches on a folder, with little overlap? It works for me! Thanks Ben!
