I got a custom made Reynolds 953 stainless steel frame made to fit the Rohlhoff (purchased from Kinetics)for day to day use, Audax riding and touring. I do not have time to do more than minimal maintenance so it is great to know that the bike is always ready for action even in the middle of winter and covered in crud and salt from the previous outing. Before I used to end up with seized up and worn out derailleurs every winter and sometimes in the summer. The adjustment is by the Rohloff sliding drop outs so no need of chain tensioner or eccentric hub (as used by SJS). The chain is heavy duty for a downhill/BMX type bike and has half links, necessary for ease of setting up. I like riding tribars and that is where I put the gear shifter, close to my right hand. Minimal noise now it is "run in" and no trouble with any shifting as long as I remember to ease off the pedals whilst it changes. Over 2 years use now and only had to change oil and adjust chain!

I bought the bike with the Rohloff gears from SJS late in 2008 and have cycled close to 2,000 miles. Ease of maintenance and the anticipated reliability are great. The downside is that the gears are effectively in two halves, the lower 7 gears and the upper 7. Changing down fron the upper to the lower works well if you know you are about to do it but otherwise almost invariably locks to 14 and, as the hill steepens, I am left floundering as I try and find the gear I want! When somebody is tailing you keep your fingers crossed that your rear mudguard survives! All other gear changes are super easy and smooth.

Fantastic hub. life time guarantee from sjs cycles very persuasive and it work very positively. Ability to select any gear while stationary very usefull especially touring fully loaded. Agree changing while pushing hard can be awkward but only needs a 1/4 second pause or changing on the bottom of stroke to allow easy changes across multiple gears very quickly. Have changed to 15 / 42 sprockets as 16 / 32 would climb walls but not reach above 25mph. replacement cables are cheap enough but rohloff branded oil is a rip off. Anticipating very long trouble free joy from this supremely engineered gearbox. No more clicking up and down with both hands, no more adjusting and cleaning and oiling gears. I love it.
