It is just over a year since I reviewed my Speedmachine. I now have three recumbents. This one a Catrike Road, and a Bacchetta Corsa. The Corsa is considerably faster than the Speedmachine uphill and accelarates more quickly having light rims and 23c tyres. It is also at least 12 lbs lighter. On the flast the mahcines cruise at a similar speed and the Speedmachine is more comfortable. I have now done over 3,500 miles on it and the Schwalbe Marathon racer tyres are still going strong. I look after it well and the only maintenance I have carried out apart from lubrication and minor wear adjustments has been the following. One of the chain tube retaining wires snapped after a couple of hundred miles and I have replaced this with a rustless spoke bent to the appropriate shape. Also, the lower underseat steering cartridge bearing was running rough so I replaced it after 3,000 miles. I think road moisture had splashed up and entered the housing. I still struggle on club runs on hills with the other lads on their uprights. Downhill and on the flat however, I can outperform almost everyone, especially into a headwind. On an upright I would be off the back against some of these riders. The disc brakes are superb and the build quality is excellent. I particularly like the dual drive as at stops I just flick into the low ratio when standing still and I am never overgeared when I set off. I think "Speedmachine" is a misnomer. "grand tourer" would be a much more suitable name!

I have ridden 700 miles on my speedmachine since new. It took me about 50 miles to get the hang of riding it confidently. It is fast on the flat, but very heavy, with rack, rack top bag, mudguards under seat steering etc. This makes hills hard work, although battling against the intense quadricep pain helps and I can certainly manage 1 in 6 hills with relative ease. the machine is wonderfully comfortable and relaxing and very well made. I also have a Catrike which I love to ride, although the speedmachine is like a magic carpet in comparison. An old neck injury makes rides over 50 miles on an upright very painful. Last week I did a brisk 70 miles on the speedmachine with NO discomfort, apart form burning thigh muscles, which is what I would expect in the circumstances. I am tempted to get a much lighter recumbent to add to my collection, although I will certainly retain and enjoy the luxury of the speed machine.
