MetaBikes are a Spanish company, who make light and fast road recumbents - if there’s a recumbent equivalent of the traditional diamond-frame racing bike, this is it. They’re light - as low as 9.5kgs (21lbs), and they have very rigid frames so every ounce of effort goes to the road. There’s a rumour that recumbents can’t climb hills - these bikes prove that wrong.

The frames are aluminium, with some lovely touches - the front derailleur stub is a streamlined oval, the head tube is integrated, with smooth rounded welds. The hardshell seats are supported by height-adjustable direct stays, the pivoting stem is also adjustable for reach, and the rear dropout is replaceable.

I was really impressed by the first MetaBikes CF that arrived just before Christmas - built quality is fantastic, the welds around the head tube area especially have been smoothed off, so it’s quite Cannondale-like. With carbon stays, forks and seat, it’s incredibly light - easy to hold the bike in one hand. The frame is very stiff, though - with direct stays running from the top of the seat down to the rear axle, every bit of power goes to the road - it climbs very quickly ;-)

MetaBikes make three basic ranges, each available with several different component levels:

MetaPhysic: These are high and fast - twin 26” or 700c wheels roll very quickly, keep gearing normal, and put you high up for great visibility...

MetaPhysic Low: The Low bikes have 20” front wheels, which are more manouverable - great for weaving through traffic or commuting...

MetaPhysic Duo: Can’t decide? The Duo lets you change between high and low configurations easily, in about five minutes...

MetaPhysic Framekits: All possibilities are available as a frame only if you’ve already got components to use - brilliant if you’re going recumbent from an upright bike. Custom builds are also no problem.
