I built this for the fun of it, basically, and because HPVelotechnik had a spare white frame that they talked me into taking ;-) It’s singlespeed, with a Surly rear disc hub, standard disc StreetMachine front wheel, Shimano XT chainset, Crank Bros Candy Ti pedals and Hope disc brakes - Mini at the back, M4 at the front. The tensioner is a Rohloff one, and the forks are the Meks Carbon AC adjustable ones. So, how does it ride? A lot better than I thought it would! When you have room to crank it up, it’s very fast, as you’d expect. For short steep hills, it’s good to have a solid back to heave against - it climbs very well. Obstacles are a mixed bag - it’ll bounce over anything smaller than about 4” high, as long as you’re going fast enough. Going down things is no problem - I tried a 2’ drop and some stairs on my first test ride, and it behaved beautifully. It’s a slightly different riding technique to normal recumbents - normally, you want to keep your shoulders back on the seat at all times - but if you do that on this bike, you get jounced around on large obstacles - so I found that it helped to sit forward slightly for big obstacles - just as you’d get out of the saddle on a conventional MTB. One other advantage I found was that, being lower, tree branches were less of a nuisance ;-) Want one? I have no idea what this bike would cost - but if you’re really interested drop me an email with some idea of the spec you want, and I’ll work out a quote... |
